‘THE PAPER PLANE’ IS A CINEMATOGRAPHIC STORY reflecting different dimensions of love. As we follow the relationship between an Asian woman and her Western partner, we experience their ups and downs. It’s visible in every little thing: in the feel of their house, when they play Mah-Jong or when they have dinner. Even though they both know that there is something off, they - out of habit - continue to stay together, until one day, a letter folded as a paper plane appears in their life. The Paper Plane reveals the news they both needed to let go of their relationship, of each other. The partner painted their world black by having an affair, but this opened new doors of enlightenment on the other side for both of them. As the partner leaves, she learns that the love for yourself is the most important kind of love.
Hugely inspired by In The Mood For Love by Wong Kar Wai, this story portrays various themes that I value: cultural exchange, human connection, individuality and ‘the woman’.
I am highly interested in the connection between different cultures. By using elements of both the Asian culture as the Western one, I create a certain contrasting aesthetic. Human connection versus individuality is also an important theme: they try to find themselves in each other, but find out they don’t necessarily need each other to do so. The story finishes with the woman showing her face fully, in an intimate close up shot. This is the only image where we truly recognise a face, the other photo’s only portray silhouettes. The focus of the story is on the woman being her most self when she finally values her individuality.
Story inspired by SACAI’s Chitose Abe
